The Hawaii Film Critics Society has cast their votes and nominated a wide range of films for their year’s end list. Dennis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049,” starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford, led the charge with nine nominations, the most of any film on the list. “The Shape of Water,” Guillermo Del Toro’s acclaimed sci-fi/romance, followed with eight nominations. Martin McDonagh’s ensemble drama “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” Greta Gerwig’s comedy “Lady Bird” and the sci-fi epic “War For the Planet of the Apes,” received seven nominations each. The just-opened Aaron Sorkin-directed “Molly’s Game,” and James Franco’s “The Disaster Artist” were given six nods, while Jordan Peele’s landmark horror film “Get Out” and Todd Hayne’s “Wonderstruck” were nominated in five categories.
The films selected were all over the map. Blockbusters like “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Coco,” “IT,” “Logan,” “Wonder Woman” and “Beauty and the Beast” all received two nominations each, while “Darkest Hour” and “Atomic Blonde” have three nominations each.
In the category for Best Hawaiian Film, the nominees are, for the first time, all locally made independent films. Brian Kohne’s “Kuleana,” Stacey Hayashi’s “Go For Broke” and Derek Peck’s “Ram Dass, Going Home” were nominated for the award which, in previous years, has gone to Cameron Crowe’s “Aloha” and Disney’s “Moana.”
Among the surprise nominations were single nominations for Michael Fassbender’s dual roles in “Alien: Covenant,” a Best Actor nod for James McAvoy’s celebrated turn in “Split” and a nomination for pop star Rihanna’s vocal performance in “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets.”
Overall, fifty-five films were nominated (sixty if you count “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” “Boo 2!: A Madea Halloween,” “The Shack,” and “Rough Night,” all up for Worst Film of 2017).
The Hawaii-based critics group, which was founded in February 2015, will vote on the nominees selected and publish a list of winners on January 12th, 2018.
